Labor Day

Notorious Big and Frank Sinatra - Everyday Struggle / A Day In The Life

Since this is the first Labor Day in my post-college career that I don't have a job to go to on Tuesday, I thought I'd wish a happy holiday to my friends in New York.

To my friends with big jobs and don't make nearly as much money as people think they do in entertainment, medicine, and over at large financial conglomerates like Amex, happy labor day.

To my overeducated friends with several degrees who can't find good work, and are doing things like selling gym memberships for a living, happy labor day.

To my former wall street friends who are out on their asses, burnt out, with bills to pay, happy labor day, take this time to relax, and take a breath, no one can figure it out for you, the hand that fed you is no longer there, and it's time to make some decisions.

To my current wall street friends, who still duke it out every day in a culture of firing and toxicity, who know that Labor Day to Thanksgiving is historically "hunting season" when the money is supposed to roll in- happy labor day and good luck.

To my yoga teachers and other free minds who are at Burning Man doing lord knows what, well you aren't really reading my blog anyway.

To the people of New York City, who got to work this morning, determined to build something to help people, to the creators, the dreamers, who pour over Quora to find answers, who have vicious emotional swings and have no idea what the future brings, I salute you.

Let's thank the real labor, the thankless work, those people who carry out their jobs despite the aggravated masses showering them with disdain.  How many did I see today on my way to the office. The subway man who had to announce that "we are stopped because of traffic ahead of us".  If he could only see the eye rolls.  Is it HIS fault? Did you know people spit at these people as the trains pass them, and it's kind of a regular thing? The traffic cop ripping tickets and preparing for wrath of the vehicle's driver running back.  Should he NOT do his job, just let every ticket slide?  To the garbage man whose truck stunk so bad I wanted to pass out when it passed me.  Should I shoot him an gross look?  Is it HIS stink?  In fact, isn't it all of ours?

Before this country gets into a tizzy about electing the next leader for the next two and a half months, let's remember that we have but one chance each day to get up and do our work and we should consider each morning a blessing.  There are no leaders that can get up inside our head and inspire us, we have to motivate ourselves.  Let's do our work today and each day.
